ICRF Specific Impurity Sources and Plasma Sheaths in Alcator C-Mod
نویسندگان
چکیده
In Alcator C-Mod, we have sought to identify ICRF specific impurity sources and estimate the lifetime of thin, low Z films in the presence of high power ICRF heating. With ICRF, the erosion rate of low-Z films is estimated to be 15-20 nm/s indicating the eroding species energy is much higher than that normally found in the SOL. Using emissive probes, plasma potential measurements confirm the presence of an enhanced sheath with ICRF when the probe is magnetically linked to the active antenna. Plasma potentials were typically 100-200 V for ~1.25 MW injected ICRF power. Furthermore, an RF sheath was unexpectedly present with insulating limiters and was dependent on the wall conditions and plasma confinement. These dependencies suggest that other scrape-off layer and plasma-surface characteristics are influencing the resulting RF sheaths. ______________________________________________ JNM keywords: Impurities, Plasma-materials interaction PSI-18 keywords: Alcator C-Mod, ICRF, RF, Sheaths PACS: 52.40.Fd, 52.40.Hf, 52.40.Kh, 52.40.Qt *Corresponding author address: MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, NW21-103, 190 Albany St. Cambridge, MA 02139 *Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] Presenting author: Stephen J Wukitch

RF Plasma Edge Interactions and Their Impact on ICRF Antenna Performance in Alcator C-Mod
In Alcator C-Mod, we have investigated the compatibility of high power ion cyclotron range of frequencies antenna with high performance plasmas and all high-Z plasma facing components, to provide operational information for future devices such as ITER. Boronization appears to be critical achieving low radiated power plasmas and is eroded rapidly such that the best performance is lost when the i...

متن کاملCentral Impurity Toroidal Rotation in ICRF Heated Alcator C-Mod Plasmas
Central impurity toroidal rotation has been observed in Alcator C-Mod ICRF heated plasmas, from the Doppler shifts of argon x-ray lines. Rotation velocities up to 1.3 10 m/s in the co-current direction have been observed in H-mode discharges that had no direct momentum input. There is a strong correlation between the increase in the central impurity rotation velocity and the increase in the pla...

Core plasma rotation is observed to change from the counter-to co-current direction during the transition from low (L) to high (H) confinement mode, in Alcator C-Mod plasmas that are heated purely ohmically. The changes of the toroidal velocities deduced from impurity Doppler measurements and magnetic perturbations associated with "sawteeth" are quantitatively similar. The magnitude of the chan...
